Geunbae Lee, President of Chonnam National University, topped the list of current high-ranking public officials in terms of personal assets, with holdings valued at approximately 12 billion KRW.


On May 30, the Government Public Officials Ethics Committee disclosed the assets of 66 high-ranking officials whose status changed between February 2 and March 1 of this year, publishing the information in the official gazette.


The total assets reported by President Lee, under his own name and those of his family members, amounted to 11,954,340,000 KRW. He declared deposits of 7,826,140,000 KRW under his own, his spouse's, and his mother's names, as well as securities worth 2,940,530,000 KRW under his and his spouse's names.


Kim Hyuk, Vice President of University of Seoul, ranked second among current officials with assets totaling 11,687,780,000 KRW. Vice President Kim owns land valued at 9,273,940,000 KRW, including plots in Yeoksam-dong and Segok-dong in Gangnam-gu, and Geoyeo-dong in Songpa-gu, Seoul. He also holds buildings worth 3,250,631,000 KRW, including neighborhood living facilities in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, and commercial properties in Jangji-dong, Songpa-gu.


Lee Hyun, Auditor at the Financial Supervisory Service, followed with reported assets of 7,920,740,000 KRW. Auditor Lee declared deposits of 5,288,790,000 KRW under his own, his spouse's, and his eldest daughter's names, as well as buildings worth 1,721,000,000 KRW, including a 59-square-meter apartment in Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and an 85-square-meter apartment in Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu, under his own name.


Among retirees, Koo Sangyeob, former Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice (now an attorney and former prosecutor), reported the largest assets at 8,765,650,000 KRW. Compared to the end of December 2023, his assets increased by 529,110,000 KRW, with deposits under his own, his spouse's, his younger son's, and his eldest daughter's names rising by 421,480,000 KRW during this period. Former Director Koo did not specify the reasons for this increase.
