"Investigating the Tool and Motive Behind the Crime"
A woman was arrested by police for setting fire to the election poster of Lee Jaemyung, the candidate from the Democratic Party of Korea.
The Gangbuk Police Station in Seoul announced on May 30 that it had arrested the woman on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act for setting fire to Lee's election poster.
A citizen is passing in front of election posters of presidential candidates posted around Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
The woman is suspected of setting fire to Lee Jaemyung's poster, which was hung on the wall of Samgaksan Elementary School in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, at around 4:33 a.m. on the same day. Police, responding to a report, arrested her at the scene.
A police official stated, "We are investigating the tool used in the crime and the motive."
Meanwhile, under Article 240 of the Public Official Election Act, anyone who damages or removes election posters without a legitimate reason can face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 4 million won.
