Transformation into a Multi-purpose Complex
Equipped with Administrative and Resident Convenience Facilities
Gangbuk-gu in Seoul is set to officially move forward with the long-anticipated construction of its new office building. The project has gained momentum after the recent Seoul City Urban Architecture Joint Committee approved, with modifications, the "Suyu-Beondong District Unit Plan Decision and Gangbuk-gu Office Special Planning District Detailed Development Plan."
The new office building will be located at 192-59 Suyu-dong, spanning from six basement levels to 17 floors above ground, with a total floor area of approximately 69,000 square meters. It will bring together key administrative institutions such as the district office, community center, public health center, and district council in one place. The building is also set to transform into a multi-purpose complex, featuring a daycare center, youth support center, care center, community hall, book lounge, and observatory, among various resident convenience facilities. An open plaza will be created at ground level to serve as a space for residents to relax and interact.
Gangbuk-gu conducted two rounds of public viewing and opinion-gathering procedures for residents between March and April this year, and held a community briefing session to mark the 30th anniversary of the district office’s opening, demonstrating its efforts to communicate with residents. Moving forward, the district plans to actively incorporate the committee’s recommendations, including securing sunlight rights, improving road structures, and utilizing underground spaces, to ensure the smooth progress of the new office building’s construction.
Gangbuk-gu Mayor Lee Soonhee stated, “We will do our utmost to ensure the construction of the new office building, which will symbolize the harmony between nature and urban development and become a future landmark of Gangbuk, proceeds without a hitch.” She added, “The new building will go beyond the limitations of the existing administrative office, serving as a new model for public facilities with open green spaces and multi-purpose cultural areas, naturally blending into the daily lives of our residents.”
The current Gangbuk-gu Office building, completed in 1974, has faced ongoing concerns over aging facilities, lack of space, and inefficiency due to the dispersion of departments. Gangbuk-gu plans to complete the relocation of all departments to temporary offices by the end of this year, begin demolition work in January next year, start construction in June next year, and aims to complete the new building by December 2028.
