Lee Junseok Apologizes for TV Debate Remarks: "I Apologize to Those Who Felt Uncomfortable"

"A Matter That Requires Thorough Verification"
Emphasizes That Raising the Issue Itself Is Justified

Lee Junseok, the presidential candidate of the Reform New Party, apologized on the 28th regarding certain expressions he used during a televised debate.

After campaigning at Yeouido Park in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, Lee met with reporters and said, "Those who have seen the original statement will know, but I actually used a more refined expression. I am not sure how I could have made it even more refined," adding, "Of course, I was aware that some citizens might have felt uncomfortable watching it, and I would like to offer my sincere apology for that."

Lee is currently facing controversy over his mention of a part of the female body during a TV debate hosted by the National Election Commission the previous day.

While he apologized for his choice of words, he maintained that the issue still deserves to be raised.

He explained, "However, from my perspective, if such words and actions are true, then they are matters that require thorough verification." Lee added, "In 2021, the Lee Jaemyung camp also acknowledged the IDs that posted problematic comments. Just as there was an investigation into the so-called 'Julie issue' during the last presidential election, I believe that scrutiny of candidates' families is necessary."

He continued, "In fact, in the case of such controversial remarks, the Lee Jaemyung camp was already aware of them at the time and made statements about them. Therefore, I do not agree with the view that it was acceptable then but is problematic to point out now. It was a valid issue at the time and remains a valid issue now."

On the morning of the same day, Lee also wrote on social media, "I asked two candidates, who have consistently spoken out on issues of gender discrimination and hate, to clarify their positions on a shocking statement made by someone online," and added, "I am convinced that candidates who cannot make a clear judgment on such distorted views of sexuality are not qualified."
