This event was organized to declare Handong Global University's vision to become a regional innovation hub based on AI and to grow into one of the nation's leading AI-specialized universities.
The event was attended by over 200 participants, including Pohang Mayor Lee Kangdeok, presidents of major universities such as POSTECH, Busan University of Foreign Studies, and Sunlin University, heads of regional institutions such as Pohang Technopark, Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, and Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence, as well as representatives from domestic and international AI technology companies including Clunix, BNINC, and EHTN.
The newly opened "Genesis Lab" is a convergence space specialized for AI startups, combining entrepreneurship, research, and culture. It will serve as a platform where young entrepreneurs and researchers can conduct innovative experiments and collaborate. Equipped with demonstration equipment, open startup spaces, and functions linked to local industries, it will act as an AI startup incubating hub.
The "Pohang AI Innovation Center" will play a pivotal role in fostering the AI industrial ecosystem by promoting AI technology commercialization, creating new industries, nurturing talent, securing national funding, and activating AI-based businesses.
Currently, three dedicated staff members from Handong Global University are assigned to the center, and two additional PhD-level researchers are being recruited. Pohang City also plans to dispatch two dedicated personnel (including a team leader) to establish a collaborative system.
Notably, the center will be organically linked with the "Pohang AI Accelerator Center," which will be equipped with high-performance computing resources such as the NVIDIA NVL72 GPU. This connection will enable a practical support system for AI demonstration, open-source distribution, and resource provision to companies, further enhancing the competitiveness of the local AI industry.
Starting this year, the Pohang AI Accelerator Center plans to gradually build a high-performance GPU infrastructure with a total investment of 15 billion KRW.
This infrastructure is regarded as one of the top AI infrastructures among local governments nationwide and is expected to be a key driving force for Pohang's rise as an AI-specialized city.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Handong Global University, which has grown into a leading educational institution in the region over the past 30 years, will become a hub for youth entrepreneurship and research innovation leading the AI era with this opening. Pohang City will make AI a core future industry and, together with Handong Global University, establish a sustainable AI city model."
Following the plaque ceremony, an AI briefing session and discussion were held, where topics such as GPU accelerator technology, AI infrastructure operation strategies, and startup case studies were discussed. This provided a meaningful opportunity to confirm strong cooperation between academia and industry.
Handong Global University plans to establish a top-tier national AI ecosystem where entrepreneurship, research, demonstration, and commercialization form a virtuous cycle, with Genesis Lab, the AI Innovation Center, and the AI Accelerator Center as its three pillars.
Pohang City intends to strengthen public-private-academic cooperation with institutions such as Handong Global University, which boasts excellent AI infrastructure, and accelerate strategic activities to attract global AI computing centers to the region, aiming to become a global AI innovation hub.
