On this day, Vice Chairman Choi Janghyuk of the Personal Information Protection Commission visited the Cyberspace Administration of China in Beijing and held a meeting with Deputy Director Wang Jingtao (vice ministerial level). Vice Chairman Choi requested that the Chinese authorities pay special attention and provide support to ensure that Chinese companies safely manage and protect the personal information of Korean citizens.

The Personal Information Protection Commission introduced its main policies that have been pursued so far, as well as plans to respond to privacy infringement threats arising from the deepening of artificial intelligence (AI) and the digital transformation. The Commission also emphasized the need for attention and support to ensure that domestic companies comply with the laws and systems of the other country and protect personal information safely. Furthermore, the Commission proposed the formation and operation of a personal information consultative body that would include countries requiring close cooperation, such as Korea and China.

Deputy Director Wang Jingtao expressed his agreement on the need for international dialogue and cooperation in the field of personal information protection, as well as joint efforts by both countries for the safe cross-border transfer of data. He responded by suggesting that, following director-level practical discussions, the two sides should discuss ways to form and operate a personal information consultative body. He also wished for the successful hosting of the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA) to be held in Korea this September.

Afterwards, Vice Chairman Choi, together with Vice Chairman Chen Jiachun of the Internet Society of China (ISC), held a meeting with representatives of Chinese internet companies such as Alibaba Group, DeepSeek, and Temu. At the meeting, he introduced the requirements for compliance with Korea's Personal Information Protection Act, the overseas transfer system, and AI policy directions, and requested that the personal information of Korean citizens be safely protected. Vice Chairman Choi plans to hold a meeting with Korean companies operating in China on the 29th to explain China's personal information protection laws and hold a Q&A session.
