The KOSPI index closed higher, supported by net buying from foreign investors and institutions.
On May 28, the KOSPI ended trading at 2,670.15, up 32.93 points (1.25%) from the previous day. Trading volume was provisionally tallied at 403.25 million shares, with a trading value of 11.1638 trillion won.
By investor type, institutions and foreign investors recorded net purchases of 742.5 billion won and 303.4 billion won, respectively, while individuals posted net sales of 990.7 billion won. In the futures market, foreigners and individuals each recorded net purchases of 499.5 billion won and 33.1 billion won, respectively, while institutions recorded net sales of 499 billion won. Program trading saw net purchases of 9.1 billion won in arbitrage trades and 66.7 billion won in non-arbitrage trades.
By industry sector, performance was mixed. The electrical and electronics sector rose by 3.49%, chemicals by 2.36%, metals by 1.8%, manufacturing by 1.53%, finance by 1.35%, IT services by 0.98%, securities by 0.82%, distribution by 0.56%, and paper and wood by 0.28%. In contrast, the machinery and equipment sector fell by 2.71%, with entertainment and culture down 1.53%, transportation equipment down 1.51%, electricity and gas down 0.81%, textiles and apparel down 0.61%, general services down 0.52%, and telecommunications down 0.5%.
Among large-cap stocks by market capitalization, more stocks rose than fell. Samsung Electronics gained 3.71%, SK hynix 2.72%, Samsung Biologics 0.19%, LG Energy Solution 6.06%, Hyundai Motor 2.2%, Kia 0.91%, Celltrion 0.26%, NAVER 2.12%, Shinhan Financial Group 0.18%, and Samsung C&T 0.47%. On the other hand, KB Financial Group declined by 0.88%, and Hanwha Aerospace ended the session sharply lower by 6.2%.
On this day, 579 stocks advanced, 312 declined, and 45 remained unchanged.
The KOSDAQ index also finished higher. On this day, the KOSDAQ closed at 728.79, up 1.68 points (0.23%) from the previous session. By investor type, institutions and foreign investors posted net purchases of 5.3 billion won and 75 billion won, respectively, while individuals recorded net sales of 71.8 billion won.
Among large-cap stocks by market capitalization, more stocks declined than advanced. Alteogen fell by 3.05%, Peptron by 2.83%, PharmaResearch by 2.9%, LegoChem Biosciences by 1.03%, Hugel by 10.36%, ABL Bio by 3.51%, Classys by 2.84%, and Samchundang Pharm by 2.93%. In contrast, EcoPro BM surged by 9.36%, HLB gained 2.28%, EcoPro 6.65%, and Rainbow Robotics 0.19%.
Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won/dollar exchange rate was trading at 1,376.3 won, down 0.2 won from the previous day.
