Illegally Altering Billboards at Other Businesses Such as Nail Shops
Court: "Significant Business Losses, 5 Million Won Fine"
A man who illegally accessed the wireless communication network of advertising billboards and displayed a photo of former President Yoon Suk-yeol along with vulgar phrases has been fined by the court.
On May 28, Judge Kim Bora of the Seoul Northern District Court's 13th Criminal Division sentenced Park (32, male), who was indicted on charges of obstruction of business by damaging computers and violation of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (infringement of information and communications networks), to a fine of 5 million won.
Park was accused of illegally accessing the wireless communication networks of a restaurant and a nail art shop located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, on February 6 of last year by entering the password and arbitrarily changing and broadcasting the wording and design on their advertising billboards.
The restaurant and nail art shop, whose billboards were hacked by Park, were forced to display a photo of former President Yoon Suk-yeol along with the phrase "Endure and live, you pigs" in front of their stores for about one day and six days, respectively. The court stated, "It appears that the victims suffered considerable business losses due to the defendant's actions," and emphasized, "No one is allowed to intrude into an information and communications network without legitimate access rights or by exceeding permitted access rights."
The court further explained the sentencing, saying, "Although the defendant has not been forgiven by the victims or compensated for the damages, it is in his favor that he is reflecting on his actions and has no prior criminal record as a first-time offender."
