Until August 31...
Compensation for 26,270 Residents
Seogu District in Gwangju (District Mayor Kim Ikang) announced on May 28 that it will provide a total of 8.5 billion KRW in compensation for military noise damage to 26,270 residents living in the noise countermeasure area near the military airfield (K-57).
The recipients are residents who are registered and actually reside in the noise countermeasure areas, including parts of Chipyeong-dong, Seochang-dong, and Yudeok-dong in Seogu District. The district plans to send compensation decision notices to each recipient by the end of this month and pay the compensation by August 31.
The compensation period is from November 27, 2020, when the Military Noise Compensation Act came into effect, to December 31, 2024. Depending on the classification of the noise countermeasure area (types 1 to 3), the monthly compensation will range from a maximum of 30,000 KRW to 60,000 KRW, with an average of about 280,000 KRW expected to be paid per person.
Objections regarding the compensation amount can be submitted until July 31. Applicants must visit the Military Noise Compensation Team of the Climate and Environment Division at Seogu District Office with documentation proving their residence and, if applicable, their workplace or business location.
Na Moonhyo, head of the Climate and Environment Division, stated, "We will do our utmost to provide administrative support so that the military noise compensation can be paid without any issues," and added, "We will continue to consult with the Ministry of National Defense to ensure that residents who have suffered from long-term noise damage can receive fairer compensation."
