Consultations on Changing Usage Following Terminal Closure
Creation of Cultural Facilities with Exhibition Spaces and a Wedding Hall
999 Apartment Units to Be Supplied Together
Sangbong Terminal, once a major transportation hub in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, is expected to be reborn as a leading "complex cultural facility" in the northeastern region, featuring exhibition halls and a public wedding venue.
On May 28, Seoul City announced that the 5th Urban Redevelopment Committee, held on the 27th, had "conditionally approved" the proposed amendment to the redevelopment promotion plan for the Sangbong 9 Redevelopment Promotion Zone, located at 83-1 Sangbong-dong, Jungnang-gu.

According to the amendment, a cultural facility equipped with exhibition spaces and a public wedding hall will be established at 83-3 Sangbong-dong. The facility will have four floors above ground, three basement levels, and a total floor area of 5,560 square meters. The goal is to complete construction by May 2029, in conjunction with a mixed-use residential and commercial complex.
This decision follows the city's agreement to change the previously planned "passenger automobile terminal and public office building," which was to be provided as a public contribution facility in the Sangbong 9 Zone, into a cultural facility. After being designated as the Sangbong 9 Redevelopment Promotion Zone in 2015, the development of Sangbong Terminal as a mixed-use complex integrating residential, commercial, and cultural elements has accelerated.
However, as the number of terminal users declined and the operating company applied for closure, the city decided, in consultation with Jungnang-gu, to establish a cultural facility at this location. As a result, five mixed-use residential and commercial towers, each with 49 floors above ground and a total floor area of approximately 290,000 square meters, are currently being constructed at Sangbong Terminal. The development will include 999 apartment units, 308 officetel units, and retail and cultural facilities on the lower floors that residents can freely use.
Choi Jinseok, Director of Housing at Seoul City, stated, "The transformation of Sangbong Terminal is expected to promote balanced development and enhance the status of the northeastern region as a central area. We anticipate the creation of a cultural facility that serves as a hub for all residents to enjoy."
