Victim Testifies: "They Hit Me for Changing the TV Channel"
Police Refer Four Nursing Home Staff to Prosecution
Caregivers at a nursing home in Incheon who habitually assaulted a female patient in her 60s have been referred to the prosecution.
On May 27, Incheon Ganghwa Police Station announced that it had booked four caregivers, including a woman in her 60s identified as A, without detention on charges of violating the Act on Welfare of Persons with Disabilities and had forwarded the case to the prosecution. A and the others are accused of repeatedly assaulting a female resident in her 60s, identified as B, at a nursing home in Ganghwa County, Incheon, between March and May of last year.
The nursing home’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured A and others dragging B into the bathroom and striking her on the head, as well as kicking B while she was lying down. B, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, has reportedly claimed that she was routinely assaulted for reasons such as changing the TV channel while watching television.
The police launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from B’s side requesting an investigation into 11 individuals associated with the nursing home, including A. The police analyzed two months’ worth of CCTV footage, referred four individuals to the prosecution after confirming evidence of assault, and decided not to refer the remaining seven. A police official stated, “There were four caregivers whose direct acts of assault were identified,” and added, “We recently concluded the investigation after analyzing the CCTV footage.”
