Junho Jung: "We Will Respond Firmly and Strongly to Political Violence"

Statement on Consecutive Assaults at Local Office
Repeated Demands Regarding the Status of Jaemyung Lee and Cheolrae Jeong

Junho Jung, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea representing Gwangju Buk-gu Gap, issued a statement at his local office on May 27 regarding a series of assault incidents, stating, "This is a serious crime that threatens public political activities," and declared, "We will respond firmly and strongly."

The incidents began on May 21, when a man in his 60s, referred to as Mr. A, visited the local office and assaulted an election staff member. The victim sustained injuries to the face and other areas, was diagnosed with two weeks of recovery, and is currently receiving treatment. Subsequently, on May 24, Mr. A returned to the office demanding CCTV footage of his previous assault and assaulted another staff member, leading to his arrest at the scene.

It has been reported that, even before the incidents, Mr. A had claimed a personal acquaintance with a particular politician and had recently made unreasonable demands, such as inquiring about the schedules of Democratic Party of Korea presidential candidate Jaemyung Lee and members Cheolrae Jeong and Junho Jung, who were participating in campaign events in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.

Jung emphasized, "This incident, which targeted a core space for election campaigning at a critical time ahead of the presidential election, is a grave crime that cannot be overlooked. We will hold those responsible fully accountable according to the law and principles for any threats aimed at public elections and national sovereignty."

Jung also stated, "I will take full responsibility for the protection and support of recovery for the election staff who were harmed," and added, "We will prepare and work even more thoroughly to create a healthy political environment where every citizen can participate with peace of mind."
