Soonchunhyang University Proposes
'AI Medical Convergence' Strategy
On May 27, the Ministry of Education announced the preliminary results for the '2025 Glocal University 30' designation. While Soonchunhyang University was included in the list, Hoseo University and Konyang University, which had drawn attention as the first private universities to attempt a merger, were not selected.
Soonchunhyang University proposed an 'AI Medical Convergence' strategy that combines medicine and engineering. The plan includes the creation of a medical convergence campus spanning Asan, Cheonan, and Naepo, as well as linking existing infrastructure such as four affiliated hospitals and a life science research institute.
Hoseo University and Konyang University signed a formal agreement in March and jointly applied for the project. However, after the application, various opinions were raised within Konyang University regarding the merger process.
The Konyang University faculty union demanded the resignation of the university president, citing a lack of prior discussion with university members. In addition, the university foundation and the church reportedly requested the university to halt the merger process on April 30.
Meanwhile, the Glocal University 30 project is a government-supported initiative aimed at promoting the joint growth of universities and their local communities. Universities with preliminary designation must submit an implementation plan by September in order to be officially designated.
