[2025 MADEX] Hyundai Rotem Makes Debut, Deploys Sherpa Forward

Exhibiting Manned-Unmanned Integrated Systems for Amphibious Operations
Targeting the Defense Market with K2 Tank Export Models and More

Hyundai Rotem will unveil a manned-unmanned integrated system capable of responding to amphibious operations at the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX), in which the company is participating for the first time. Leveraging decades of experience in ground weapon systems, Hyundai Rotem will showcase products optimized for amphibious operations that require movement between land and water.

The flagship product of the manned-unmanned integrated system lineup is the multipurpose unmanned vehicle 'HR-Sherpa.' The HR-Sherpa is an electrified unmanned platform independently developed by Hyundai Rotem, and can be equipped with a variety of equipment depending on the mission requirements.

Since its initial unveiling in 2018, the HR-Sherpa has undergone continuous performance upgrades, and last year evolved into the latest fourth-generation model. The Sherpa is smaller than a compact car and features a six-wheel electric drive system. It boasts excellent maneuverability, including a 360-degree on-the-spot rotation function, and uses airless tires that are highly durable and eliminate the risk of punctures, making it well-suited for rough terrain. On a single charge, it can travel at a maximum speed of 30 km/h for about six hours. Additionally, it is equipped with a remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS) developed by Hyundai WIA, enabling long-range reconnaissance and surveillance. It is capable of a wide range of missions, including transporting supplies, evacuating casualties, providing fire support, and detecting hazardous materials, depending on the objective. Its most notable feature is remote driving capability. The HR-Sherpa can autonomously follow a person walking ahead (follow-me mode) and can also conduct autonomous driving along designated routes for patrol and reconnaissance missions.

Since being awarded the exclusive contract for the multipurpose unmanned vehicle rapid demonstration acquisition project in 2020, Hyundai Rotem has successfully completed field demonstrations with the military in areas such as the GOP and DMZ, and has delivered the vehicles. The HR-Sherpa is the only multipurpose unmanned vehicle that has been optimized for actual field use through direct feedback from the South Korean military.

Hyundai Rotem also plans to showcase the K2EX (K2 Export), the export model of the K2 tank, as well as a next-generation tank currently under development. The K2EX features enhanced performance with the addition of various state-of-the-art electronic components and devices based on a digital platform. It is equipped with a hard-kill active protection system capable of intercepting and neutralizing incoming projectiles such as anti-tank missiles, thereby increasing its survivability. The tank also incorporates a remote weapon station (RCWS) and a battlefield situational awareness system that provides a 360-degree field of view, enabling more effective operation. It is also capable of information-programmed ammunition operation, allowing the crew to control the timing and method of ammunition detonation for more effective engagement of targets.

A Hyundai Rotem representative stated, "Through continuous research and development, including the multipurpose unmanned vehicle HR-Sherpa, we have fostered future manned-unmanned integrated system technologies and related product lines that protect human lives. Based on our ground weapon system capabilities, we will strengthen the competitiveness of our products for use in a variety of environments, including amphibious operations, and target the global market."
