Gangdong-gu in Seoul is strengthening user safety by fully replacing the emergency bells in public open restrooms within the district with new models and expanding their installation.
The emergency bell inside the restroom is a safety device that, when activated, prompts a police dispatch. Because it is directly connected to the police station, it allows for an immediate response in case of an emergency involving a restroom user. At the restroom entrance, a sign reading "Safe Restroom" and an emergency light are installed together, enabling anyone outside to recognize an emergency situation and report it to the police.
To prevent malfunctions and operational failures caused by the aging of emergency bells installed in 2018, the district replaced the emergency bells in 20 public open restrooms with the latest equipment and newly installed bells in 2 additional locations that previously had none, completing upgrades in a total of 22 locations.
In addition, Gangdong-gu is working to create safe restrooms by regularly inspecting for illegal recording devices in public open restrooms through a resident monitoring team for illegal filming.
Shin Eunok, head of the Family Policy Division of Gangdong-gu, stated, "Through the maintenance of emergency bells and inspections for illegal recording devices, we aimed to prevent crimes that may occur in public restrooms and to create an environment where residents can use restrooms with peace of mind. We will continue to regularly inspect the emergency bells to ensure proper response in emergency situations."
