On May 26, Jeollanam-do held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Jangsan~Jara Island Bridge Construction Project' at Bukgang Pier in Jangsan-myeon, Shinan, officially commencing the construction of the maritime bridge.

Approximately 500 people attended the ceremony, including Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok, Acting Shinan County Governor Kim Daein, Jeollanam-do Provincial Council Agriculture and Fisheries Committee Chairman Kim Moonsu, Provincial Councilor Choi Misook, Shinan County Council Chairman Lee Sangjoo, as well as residents from Jangsan-do and Jara-do.

The 'Jangsan~Jara Island Bridge Construction Project' aims to connect the last unlinked section of Local Road No. 805, which is managed by Jeollanam-do.

This project serves as a key axis of Shinan County's marine tourism brand, the 'Diamond Archipelago' initiative. The total length of the section is 3.04 km (with 1.63 km of maritime bridge), and it will be constructed as a two-lane road. The total project cost is 212.2 billion won.

Once the Jangsan~Jara Island Bridge opens, the travel time for island residents to reach the emergency medical center in Mokpo in case of an emergency will be reduced from over two hours by ferry to approximately one hour by car.

This is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for island residents, including much better access to emergency medical services and welfare.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the bridge will not only alleviate the sense of isolation experienced by island residents but also have a positive impact on revitalizing the local tourism industry.

With the groundbreaking of the Jangsan~Jara Island Bridge, all five islands?Amtae, Palgeum, Anjwa, Jara, and Jangsan?along Local Road No. 805 will be connected. Jeollanam-do plans to continue urging the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to expedite the construction of the remaining seven bridges located on National Road No. 2, in order to further improve transportation convenience and living conditions for Shinan County residents.

Governor Kim Youngrok stated, "I sincerely congratulate the residents of Jangsan-do, who have endured inconvenient living conditions for so many years," and added, "With the groundbreaking of this bridge, we will further strengthen our support to improve transportation welfare and revitalize tourism in Jangsan and throughout Shinan County."

Meanwhile, the 'Diamond Archipelago' refers to the region where nine out of Shinan's 14 towns and townships?Jaeun, Amtae, Palgeum, Anjwa, Jangsan, Shini, Haui, Docho, and Bigeum?are clustered. The name comes from the area's diamond-shaped geography. A total of 16 bridges, both land and maritime, are planned to connect this region. So far, eight bridges have been completed and are in use. With this groundbreaking, Jeollanam-do has begun construction on one more bridge. Of the remaining seven bridges on the National Road No. 2 section, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is currently designing one, while six are still in the planning stage.
