Lee Jaemyung's Approval Rating Declines, Kim Moonsu Gains Momentum
Unpredictable Race After Poll Publication Ban
Undecided Voters Among Youth and Self-Employed Draw Attention
As the 21st presidential election approaches, a series of opinion polls show that the gap in approval ratings between Lee Jaemyung, the Democratic Party candidate, and Kim Moonsu, the People Power Party candidate, is narrowing. With the election drawing near, there are signs of conservative voters rallying again, and it is expected that votes from those in their 20s by age group and self-employed individuals by occupation will become increasingly important.
As of the 26th, with eight days remaining until the presidential election, the overall trend in opinion polls shows that the gap in approval ratings between the first and second place candidates is narrowing compared to the early stages of the race. In a Gallup poll (conducted from the 20th to the 22nd, targeting 1,002 people aged 18 or older nationwide through mobile phone interviews), Lee Jaemyung recorded 45%, Kim Moonsu 36%, and Lee Joonseok 10%. Similar trends have been observed in other regular opinion polls, such as the National Barometer Survey (NBS) and Realmeter.
Based on the current situation, Lee Jaemyung is maintaining his lead and is generally viewed as the frontrunner. However, it is difficult to predict how the results may change in opinion polls conducted after May 28, when the publication of poll results will be prohibited.
The prevailing view is that the votes of undecided groups, including young people, women, and the self-employed, have become even more important. The demographic group with the highest proportion of undecided voters is those in their 20s, including a large number of students. According to the Gallup poll, among those in their 20s, Lee Jaemyung received 31%, Kim Moonsu 18%, Lee Joonseok 29%, and the proportion of respondents withholding their opinion was 21%.
Kim Bongshin, Vice President of Metavoice, analyzed, "Among those in their 20s, male voters show higher support for Lee Joonseok, while among females, support for Lee Jaemyung is increasing due to opposition to martial law, which is likely to result in a higher overall turnout compared to the past. For those who have not decided whom to support, their choices could be greatly influenced by livelihood policies or statements that affect voter sentiment. It is important for candidates to present policy pledges that are tailored to these voters."
