Modern Experience of Traditional Judo Culture
Expectations for Revitalizing Local Businesses and Attracting Foreign Tourists
Jongno-gu, Seoul will host a large-scale interactive exhibition titled "Soju Game Dyon," which reinterprets Korea's traditional 'Judo (Sudo)' drinking culture in a modern way. The event will take place from June 1 to June 30 in the Youth Street area of Gwanchuldong.
This event is a project aimed at transforming Youth Street in Gwanchuldong, a special zone within the Jongno Cheonggye Tourism Special Zone, into a cultural space where tradition and modernity, art and play coexist. The event has been planned with a focus on revitalizing local businesses and attracting foreign tourists.
The exhibition, directed by 'Soju Artist' Funijun, will feature a variety of main displays such as "How to Drink Soju: 10 Steps," "10 Themes of K-Drinking Culture," and a liquor-themed board game. There will also be a banner exhibition using 25 streetlight banners as canvases throughout the Jongno 1~3-ga area, as well as opportunities to experience the Soju Game and view artworks in collaboration with 33 nearby shops.
In particular, every Sunday will feature a "Judo One-Day Class" for both domestic and foreign tourists. Participants can listen to an explanation of Funijun's artworks and directly experience Korean drinking culture. Advance reservations are available through the Seoul Public Service Reservation system (10 people per session, participation fee 5,000 KRW).
On June 7 at 3:00 p.m., an opening performance will be held in Zone 4 of Youth Street in Gwanchuldong. A variety of programs are planned, including a collaborative art show by Funijun and a DJ, a dance performance, a Soju Game performance demonstration, and a talk concert with the artist.
Jung Moonheon, mayor of Jongno-gu, stated, "We expect 'Soju Game Dyon,' which presents Korea's unique Judo culture as a cultural and artistic content, will offer foreign tourists a new opportunity to experience Korean culture and revitalize the local economy. We hope for much interest and participation in this month-long event in June."
