People Power Party Makes Final Push with City Center Rally

On May 25, ten days before the 21st presidential election, rival political parties in Gwangju faced off with "solidarity" and "intensive campaigning." The opposition bloc, including the Democratic Party of Korea and the Party for Justice and Innovation, jointly declared their support for candidate Lee Jae Myung, while the People Power Party responded with a campaign rally in the city center in a last-minute effort to win over voters.

The Democratic Party of Korea, the Party for Justice and Innovation, the Basic Income Party, and the Sonamu Party Gwangju Branch held a joint press conference at the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Election Committee's Election Communication Office on the same day, officially announcing their support for Lee Jae Myung. They also issued a joint declaration under the theme of "Defending the Constitution, Resolving Insurrection, and Major Social Reform."


The four opposition parties stated, "In order to overcome the constitutional crisis caused by the state of emergency and acts of insurrection, it is necessary for Lee Jae Myung to be elected." They added, "We will unite the capabilities of each party to ensure a decisive victory and enable strong governance." They further emphasized, "We will mobilize the nationwide networks of each party so that not only Gwangju citizens, but voters across the country, can support candidate Lee."


On the same day, the People Power Party Gwangju Branch held an intensive campaign rally in front of the National Asia Culture Center in Dong-gu, Gwangju, countering the opposition. According to the organizers, approximately 300 people participated in the rally.

The People Power Party Gwangju Election Committee stated, "With support for candidate Kim Moon Soo on the rise, we organized this intensive rally to increase support from Gwangju citizens who have upheld liberal democracy."


Lee Junghyun, co-chair of the People Power Party Election Committee, said at the Gwangju committee meeting, "Candidate Kim Moon Soo is gaining momentum and consolidating support, while candidate Lee Jae Myung is losing ground and his popularity is fading." He added, "Let us all become a revolutionary force to create a dramatic turnaround in the final moments."
