As the busy farming season begins in earnest, Damyang County in South Jeolla Province is expanding support for agricultural policy insurance to help stabilize the management of farmers, amid an increase in crop damage caused by agricultural machinery accidents, abnormal weather, and natural disasters.

According to the county on the 23rd, it provides support for 80 to 90 percent of insurance premiums for three types of insurance: Agricultural Workers' Safety and Accident Insurance, Crop Disaster Insurance, and Comprehensive Agricultural Machinery Insurance. In cases where certain conditions are met, the county covers the entire insurance premium.

In particular, small-scale farms in Damyang, where farmers aged 65 or older have less than 10,000 square meters of cultivated land, are eligible for full coverage of their share of the Agricultural Workers' Safety and Accident Insurance premium.

Rice farmers can also enroll in Crop Disaster Insurance without any out-of-pocket expenses, and certified organic eco-friendly farms are likewise eligible for full support. Enrollment is open to farmers or agricultural corporations registered as agricultural business entities, and applications can be made through local agricultural cooperatives.

Enrollment in Agricultural Workers' Safety and Accident Insurance and Comprehensive Agricultural Machinery Insurance is available year-round, while the enrollment period for Crop Disaster Insurance varies depending on the crop and facility, so farmers need to confirm the timing through their local agricultural cooperative.

Applications for rice disaster insurance will be accepted until the 20th of next month. If the pest and disease rider is selected, coverage will also include damage from seven types of diseases and pests, such as rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, and stripe disease.

A county official stated, "Agricultural policy insurance is the only mechanism that provides actual compensation for losses in the event of natural disasters or accidents," and added, "As abnormal weather events continue to repeat, we hope that more farmers will enroll in insurance and continue their farming activities with greater stability."
