Until now, Jigyeong 3-ri, the northernmost village of Pohang City, had been receiving its water supply from Yeongdeok County. Now, for the first time, Pohang City's tap water has started flowing to the village.
This measure expands the water supply network to Jigyeong 3-ri, located at the northernmost administrative boundary of Pohang City. It is regarded as an example of the city's "living area-centered administration" philosophy, which aims to provide equal living infrastructure to all citizens, even at the edge of its administrative borders.
Previously, Jigyeong 3-ri had received its water supply from the Namjeong Water Purification Plant in neighboring Yeongdeok County. However, due to the different administrative jurisdictions, there were ongoing difficulties in ensuring stable and consistent water supply and management.
In response, local residents requested a stable water supply solution. Pohang City decided to provide its own water supply after consultations with residents and relevant agencies in August last year.
Following this decision, a total budget of 225.82 million won was invested to install 1,629 meters of water pipes and to carry out water supply branch construction for 30 households. The project began in February this year and was completed on May 23.
With this transition, residents of Jigyeong 3-ri can now benefit from safe and stable tap water services managed directly by Pohang City, including water purification and a systematic water quality management system.
The Pohang City Waterworks Headquarters has earned public trust through regular water quality inspections, water loss management, and ongoing facility improvements. With the expansion of the supply network, Jigyeong 3-ri is now included in this management system.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Administrative services should be provided equally, whether in the city center or in the villages at the edge of our boundaries," and added, "With this transition to supplying tap water in Jigyeong 3-ri, we will further strengthen living area-centered administration and infrastructure expansion so that no citizen is excluded from the benefits of essential infrastructure."
This transition in water supply not only resolved a long-standing local issue through swift administrative action and by reflecting residents' opinions, but also demonstrates Pohang City's commitment to balanced administration that respects the living rights of all citizens by providing the same level of service to outlying areas like Jigyeong 3-ri, which are often at risk of being left behind in terms of living infrastructure.
