Korean Society of Sydney Donates 18.7 Million Won for Gyeongbuk Wildfire Relief: "Deeply Saddened by Loss of Life and Property"

On May 23, the Korean Society of Sydney visited the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government Building to donate 21,035 Australian dollars (approximately 18.7 million Korean won) through the Community Chest of Korea to support recovery efforts following the wildfires in North Gyeongsang Province.

The donation ceremony was attended by Lee Cheolwoo, Governor of North Gyeongsang Province, Oh Hyeyoung, President of the Korean Society of Sydney, and Park Diana, Executive Committee Member of the National Unification Advisory Council, who joined together in support of the recovery efforts.

This donation was raised by Koreans residing in Sydney, Australia, and will be used for wildfire recovery and assistance to those affected in North Gyeongsang Province.

The Korean Society of Sydney was established in December 1968 as the Korean Society of Australia, and was officially registered with the New South Wales (NSW) state government in 1981.

Currently, there are more than 40 Korean community organizations, including the Korean Society, as well as over 300 religious organizations and 45 Korean language schools actively operating in Sydney, covering a wide range of fields such as culture, welfare, politics, sports, veterans' affairs, and education.

Oh Hyeyoung, President of the Korean Society of Sydney, stated, "I was deeply saddened to see the significant loss of life and property caused by the wildfires in North Gyeongsang Province. I hope that the donations, sincerely collected by the Korean community in Sydney, will provide at least some support to help stabilize the lives of residents in the affected areas."

Lee Cheolwoo, Governor of North Gyeongsang Province, expressed his gratitude, saying, "It is a great comfort and encouragement to know that people from faraway Australia empathize with the pain of North Gyeongsang Province and have sent their heartfelt support. The donations you have sent will be used with great care to help heal the wounds of the affected residents and restore their daily lives."
