Posting Shorts Videos on Social Media to Criticize Lee Jaemyung
Satirizing the "Hotel Economics" and "Coffee Cost" Controversies

Kim Eunhye, a member of the People Power Party, recently posted a video satirizing Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate, and his so-called "hotel economics" and "coffee cost of 120 won," which have been the subject of recent debate. On the 22nd, three short videos criticizing Lee Jae-myung's "hotel economics" and "coffee cost of 120 won" were uploaded to Kim's social media channels. Episode 1 is set in a hotel, episode 2 in a cafe, and episode 3 in a bakery. In the first episode, Kim appears as the owner of "Eunhye Hotel." Then, a man calls Kim and says, "I'd like to reserve the best suite room."

Kim responds, "A suite room reservation? Yes. Oh, you've already paid the deposit? Then, may I have your name, please?" However, the name Kim writes down is "NoShowMerong." Later, the man calls again and says, "Please cancel my reservation for the sake of the economy," and as a result, "Eunhye Hotel" goes out of business.

At the end of the video, the man suggests, "You've worked hard running the hotel. Now, let's try selling 120-won coffee for 10,000 won," to which Kim replies, "Wow, I'll become rich," ending the episode. In the second episode, set in a cafe, Kim transforms into the owner of "Eunhye Coffee." When two women visit the cafe, Kim greets them, "Welcome. This is Eunhye Coffee. What would you like to order?"

However, the women toss one 100-won coin and two 10-won coins onto the counter and order, "I'll have the cost-price coffee." Kim then picks up the 120 won and asks, "Candidate Lee Jae-myung, is this for real?" Kim dedicates the video "to the self-employed and small business owners in Korea who are suffering because of ignorant politicians." The third episode, set in a bakery, follows a similar context as the first. A customer orders 1 million won worth of bread and then says, "I'm canceling for the sake of the economy," which leads to "Eunhye Bakery" going out of business.

Lee's "hotel economics" became a topic of debate following his remarks during a campaign speech in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, on the 16th. The "hotel economics" concept is that a tourist pays a 100,000-won deposit to reserve a hotel room, later cancels the reservation, but in the meantime, the 100,000 won circulates through a fried chicken shop, a shoe store, a bakery, and so on, thereby revitalizing the economy.

In addition, Lee's comment that "the cost of coffee is 120 won" also sparked controversy. On the same day in Gunsan, Lee recalled an episode from his time as governor of Gyeonggi Province, when he suggested to merchants while renovating a valley, "(Even if you sell chicken porridge for 50,000 won, sweating profusely, you only make 30,000 won profit. But if you sell a cup of coffee, you can get 8,000 to 10,000 won, and when I checked, the cost was only 120 won.)" He went on to say, "So I persuaded the merchants that if we clean up the valley, build walking trails like those in European tourist destinations, and add parking lots, more tourists would come."
