Lee Suhee, the head of Gangdong District, addressed the small-scale road collapse that occurred at 46-6 Myeongil-dong on the afternoon of the 22nd, stating, "I believe residents may feel significant anxiety following the recent large-scale sinkhole incident," and added, "We will make every effort, including thorough inspections and necessary measures, to ensure the safety and daily lives of our residents."
Restoration work is underway for the small-scale road collapse that occurred on the afternoon of the 22nd. Provided by Gangdong District.
The Seoul Eastern Road Management Office suspects that the cause of the small-scale road collapse was insufficient compaction beneath the section where a water pipe was installed. Temporary restoration work was completed overnight, and asphalt pavement work was carried out in the early morning of the 23rd.
According to the fire department and Gangdong District Office, the underground cavity (void space) was measured to have a diameter of 15 cm and a depth of 20 cm. There were no injuries.
Since the 2nd of this month, the district has been conducting urgent and thorough inspections for underground cavities in all road sections within its jurisdiction, including both city and district roads, prioritizing the safety of residents above all else.
