This support was provided to help Myanmar international students continue their studies and stabilize their lives after suffering damages from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, on March 28. Many students lost their family homes or livelihoods due to the earthquake. The university carefully assessed the extent of the damage and developed support measures accordingly.
Min Thandar That (25), a fourth-year student in the Department of Korean Language Education who received support, said, "During this difficult time in Myanmar, Keimyung University showed concern and provided support, which allowed me to focus on my studies with peace of mind. Recently, I also participated in volunteer work in Korea, as the country seems to be going through a difficult time due to wildfires. With this spirit, I will strive to become a person who contributes to both Korea and Myanmar."
Aye Nyein San (25), president of the Myanmar Student Association, said, "More students and teachers participated in the fundraising than I expected, and it became direct help for our Myanmar students. I feel both proud and grateful, and I will repay this kindness with my academic achievements."
The donation ceremony was attended by Lee Sungyong, Chairman of the Keimyung 1% Love Sharing Association and Vice President for Student Affairs and Admissions, Kim Sunjung, Vice President for International Affairs, and related departments, who encouraged the students. Chairman Lee stated, "When we heard that students studying far from home were suffering from a major disaster like an earthquake, we gathered the warm hearts of our members to provide support. We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities and solidarity as members of the international community."
Currently, there are 177 Myanmar students enrolled at Keimyung University, and the 19 students who received support were confirmed to have sustained actual damages. The International Cooperation Team and the Myanmar Student Association reviewed students' applications to verify the damage and selected the recipients.
The Keimyung 1% Love Sharing Association is a fund created by donating 1% of faculty and staff salaries. To date, it has delivered over 700 million won in donations to disaster-affected areas both domestically and internationally. Recently, it has also actively participated in supporting wildfire recovery efforts, continuously fulfilling its social responsibility for neighborly assistance and relief activities.
