'Carbon-Free Energy Research Association' Launched... Official Kickoff of Carbon Neutrality Strategy Project

Experts from Industry, Academia, Research, and Government Gather Together
Building Policy Consensus and Delivering Strategies

The Carbon-Free Energy Research Association, a practical cooperation platform set to lead the domestic carbon-free energy ecosystem, has been officially launched.

On May 22, the Carbon-Free Energy Research Association held its inauguration ceremony at the Asti Hotel in Busan, declaring the establishment of a full-cycle strategy and cooperative framework covering everything from the production to the utilization of carbon-free energy sources such as hydrogen, ammonia, and renewable energy.

This event went beyond a simple founding ceremony and included in-depth discussions on domestic and international trends in carbon-free energy technologies and policy implementation strategies. Jeong Jaehoon, head of the Energy Division of the Democratic Party of Korea's Future Economic Growth Strategy Committee, attended the event and expressed the party's intention to pursue further discussions, leaving open the possibility of institutional adoption.

During the event, policy proposals were presented, including analyses of technology trends across hydrogen fuel cells, offshore wind power, and the entire hydrogen value chain, as well as the creation of a bunkering hub centered on the Gadeokdo liquid hydrogen import terminal and the establishment of an international cooperative testbed.

Participants also reached a consensus on the need to attract a cryogenic research institute to Busan. There were suggestions to establish a cryogenic demonstration platform in the region that spans basic science, biomedical, and applied technologies, to develop it into a global certification and technology standardization hub, and to contribute to the settlement of master's and doctoral-level talent and the creation of a research ecosystem.

The necessity of building a technology convergence research model based on industry-academia-research-government cooperation and establishing a multilateral governance system was also emphasized.

Jeong Jaehoon stated, "Busan, as Korea's leading port city, is the optimal location for hydrogen and ammonia supply chains," adding, "I hope the launch of this association will become a turning point that leads the national carbon neutrality policy and industrial transformation."

More than 50 experts from industry, academia, and research institutes across the entire carbon-free energy value chain attended the inauguration ceremony. Moving forward, the association plans to establish a sustainable implementation system through regular forums, policy roundtables, and global research cooperation.
