UNIST Appoints Song Jaeho, Chairman of Kyungdong Holdings, as 10th Chairman of the Board

A Key Figure Steering the Advancement of National and Regional Science and Technology

UNIST (President Park Jongrae) appointed Song Jaeho, Chairman of Kyungdong Holdings, as the 10th Chairman of the Board on May 20.

The term will last for three years, until April 2028.


Chairman Song officially assumed the position through an extraordinary board meeting held at El Tower in Yangjae-dong, Seoul, on the same day. This marks his second term as Chairman, following his previous appointment as the 9th Chairman in 2023.


Chairman Jaeho Song graduated from the Department of Business Administration at Sogang University and earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. He began his career as a management strategy consultant, served as President of Kyungdong City Gas in 2005, and is currently the CEO and Chairman of Kyungdong Holdings.


He also served as Vice President of the International Gas Union starting in 2015, and as the 15th and 16th President of the Korea City Gas Association.


In 2007, during the early days of UNIST's establishment, Kyungdong City Gas, which is headquartered in Ulsan like UNIST, donated 5 billion won to the university, laying the foundation for fostering talent in science and technology.


To commemorate this, UNIST established the Kyungdong Scholarship Foundation in 2008 and named the main auditorium on the fourth floor of the university headquarters "Kyungdong Hall." More than 570 students who received scholarships from the foundation are now playing important roles in advancing the nation's science and technology across various fields.


Chairman Song has contributed to the university's development for over a decade as a board member of UNIST since 2015, and he will continue his journey with UNIST as the 10th Chairman.


He stated, "I deeply feel the importance of the fact that the advancement of science and technology is responsible for the prosperity of the nation and future generations," adding, "I will do my utmost to serve as a guide so that UNIST, the local community, and the nation can all develop together."
