On May 22, Gwangju City announced that it will hold the '2025 Gwangju Biodiversity Day' commemorative event at Hwangryonggang Chinsu Park on May 26, in celebration of the 'International Day for Biological Diversity' (May 22).
The event, organized by the Citizens' Life Environment Council, will bring together local residents, civic groups, businesses, and public institutions. It is intended to reaffirm the importance of biodiversity and to express hopes for the designation of Jangnok National Wetland as a Ramsar Wetland.
The 'International Day for Biological Diversity' is a global observance established to commemorate May 22, 1992, when the United Nations adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity. Various events are held worldwide to promote biodiversity conservation.
The day's program will include a pre-event performance, awards for contributors to natural environment conservation, a progress report on the 2024 action pledge, a performance wishing for the Ramsar Wetland designation of Jangnok National Wetland, and activities to remove invasive plants and clean up the area, among other diverse activities.
Last year, the city held its first 'Gwangju Biodiversity Event' to mark the Ramsar Wetland designation of Pyeongdume Wetland in Mudeungsan. Through these efforts, Gwangju is building social consensus on the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
Going forward, the city plans to continue expanding ecological experience programs linked to eco-tourism resources such as Jangnok National Wetland, Gwangjuho Lake Ecological Park, and Mudeungsan National Park, with the goal of establishing Gwangju as a world-class ecological city.
