This training was organized to maximize the effectiveness of practical, hands-on education by linking it with disaster medicine classes. Its purpose was to strengthen the field response capabilities and practical skills of second-year students in the Department of Emergency Medical Services who have completed the relevant coursework.
The drill was conducted in a simulation format, with participants acting as actual patients. The focus was on practically improving situational response skills?such as communication, decision-making, and teamwork?through collaboration between active emergency medical technicians and students.
The training involved 30 active emergency medical technicians from the Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Changwon regions, as well as 36 second-year students from Dong-Eui Science University’s Department of Emergency Medical Services. Each participant performed their respective roles and duties within a scenario that simulated a real disaster scene.
In addition, the training covered all activities centered on emergency medical teams during the initial phase of the disaster emergency medical system?specifically, before the arrival of the Rapid Response Team and Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT). The exercise realistically simulated the tasks of the first-arriving fire emergency medical technicians and the collaboration procedures with subsequent teams.
In particular, by assuming a disaster situation with multiple casualties, the training systematically covered each step?such as triage, emergency care, and patient transport?in a manner closely resembling real-life scenarios. Through this, students were able to comprehensively acquire both an understanding of the disaster emergency medical system and practical skills.
An active emergency medical technician who participated in the Busan Fire Academy training commented, "This drill was conducted in an urgent atmosphere reminiscent of an actual disaster site, allowing us to have a realistic experience together with the students. I believe it was very helpful for prospective emergency medical technicians to develop their field response capabilities and teamwork."
Park Youngsoo, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medical Services at Dong-Eui Science University, stated, "This training was not just a simple simulation; it was a valuable opportunity for students to directly experience the urgency and response system of the field by working alongside active emergency medical technicians. It has served as a chance to deepen their understanding of the disaster emergency medical system and to enhance its practical applicability and effectiveness in real-world situations."
This year, all graduates of the Department of Emergency Medical Services at Dong-Eui Science University achieved a 100% pass rate on the national certification exam. Dong-Eui Science University, with its goal of nurturing emergency medical experts, is continuously strengthening major courses tailored to field duties and developing curricula in collaboration with field professionals. The university plans to further enhance systematic practical training and field-oriented education to prepare for various emergency situations, including disasters, thereby fostering emergency medical professionals equipped with both expertise and practical skills.
