MS: "Technical Support Ends October 14... No More Security Updates"
Free Upgrade Offered to Windows 10 Users
Windows 11 Reduces Security Incidents by 62% Compared to Windows 10
Microsoft (MS) will end technical support for its Windows 10 operating system (OS) in October. Microsoft Korea plans to encourage users to switch to the latest OS, Windows 11.
According to Microsoft Korea on May 22, technical support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, and security updates will no longer be provided. The company explained that, as security risks are increasing, there are concerns about attacks exploiting security vulnerabilities after support ends.
Since launching Windows 11 in 2021, MS has offered free upgrades to existing Windows 10 users. As a result, anyone using a genuine version of Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11. However, if a user's computer does not meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11, the upgrade may not be possible.
MS provides a tool to check whether a user's PC can be updated to Windows 11. Users can open the Settings app by clicking the Start button, then navigate to Update & Security - Windows Update. On this update page, users can check whether they are eligible for the free Windows 11 upgrade.
In addition, all Windows 10 PC users will receive notifications about the end of support, and these notifications will also provide information on how to transition to Windows 11.
Windows 11 offers enhanced security features compared to previous OS versions. According to MS, Windows 11 has reduced the incidence of security incidents by 62% compared to Windows 10, and firmware attacks have decreased by three times.
Windows 11’s advanced security features, which are enabled by default, integrate software and hardware functions. As a result, the OS protects even internal areas against the latest security threats. Specifically, the following features are enabled by default: ▲hardware-based protection through TPM 2.0 ▲virtualization-based security (VBS) ▲a blocklist for vulnerable drivers.
If a Windows 10 computer currently in use does not meet the upgrade requirements for Windows 11, users can access Windows 11 by purchasing a new computer. Microsoft Korea is offering discounts on computers that support Windows 11 through major e-commerce platforms until June.
Son Hyunkak, Windows & Microsoft 365 Category Lead for Southeast Asia, India, and Korea at Microsoft Korea, said, "At a time when the need for new defense mechanisms is emerging, we hope you will build the most modern and secure computing environment with the new operating system and PC."
