Namgu District in Gwangju has begun thorough preparations to ensure that local residents can smoothly exercise their valuable voting rights.


According to Namgu District on May 21, as the 21st presidential election approaches, the number of eligible voters in the district has been tallied at 176,417. There are 83,501 male voters and 92,916 female voters. The number of first-time voters is counted at 2,492. These are young voters born on or before June 4, 2007, most of whom are currently in their third year of high school. They make up 1.41% of all eligible voters.


By age group, voters in their 50s are the largest group at 33,021, followed by those in their 40s at 32,524. There are 30,808 voters aged 70 or older, and 30,349 voters in their 60s. Voters in their 30s and 20s number 23,058 and 22,483, respectively. The oldest voter in the district is a 113-year-old woman.


Namgu District is also accelerating preparations for both early voting and the main election day. To ensure that voting proceeds quickly and accurately, the district is conducting three rounds of mock tests before early voting begins.


On May 19 and 21, all voting procedures from start to finish were tested with the participation of supervisors and equipment managers. The third round of testing is scheduled for May 28.


In addition, on May 19, the district sent booklet-type election materials containing information such as presidential candidate pledges, necessary for voters' decisions, to 95,831 households. On May 24, leaflet-type election materials and voting guides will also be sent to each household.


There will be 70 polling stations set up throughout the district for early and main voting. Early voting stations will be installed in each of the 17 neighborhoods in Namgu, with one station per neighborhood. Installation of these polling stations will take place on May 28. On May 29 and 30, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., voters can exercise their rights at the polling station nearest their residence or at any polling station established in towns and neighborhoods nationwide.


Main polling stations will be set up on June 2. There will be 53 polling stations in the 17 neighborhoods within the district, and voters may exercise their rights only at the polling station designated for their place of residence.


A district official stated, "Participating in voting is part of the process of building a democratic society," and added, "Since the world we desire begins with our choices, we will do our utmost in election-related work so that eligible voters in the district can exercise their rights without inconvenience."
