Gangdong District in Seoul is operating a "Upcycling Experience Education" program for local elementary school students, dividing it into the first and second halves of this year. Held at the Gangdong Re&Upcycle Plaza, this program is designed to allow students to directly experience the meaning of resource circulation and encourage them to put it into practice in their daily lives.
The education program is conducted by professional instructors who combine theory with hands-on activities. Various experiences are included, such as learning waste separation through coding and making "Tottu Keyrings" using discarded plastic bottle caps. After the practical sessions, outdoor activities are also provided, such as a waste separation OX quiz and visits to the Resource Circulation Promotion Center and Areumin Library.
The first half of the program attracted so much interest that registration closed just one day after it began, and it will run through June. Applications for the second half of the year (September to November) can be made via the Seoul Public Service Reservation System starting in August. Since its opening in September 2023, Gangdong Re&Upcycle Plaza has served as a hub for resource circulation practices, with more than 2,000 local residents participating in upcycling experience education.
Bae Kyungsook, head of the Gangdong District Cleaning Administration Division, said, "Resource circulation does not require grand gestures; it starts with small actions in everyday life. Through this educational program, I hope that young students will naturally embrace the value of upcycling and continue to put it into practice in their daily lives."
