Budget Savings Achieved Through Public Contributions from Reconstruction Projects
New Sports Facility Meets Local Demand with Swimming Pool, Equipment-Based Pilates, Multipurpose Gymnasium, and Fitness Center
Official Opening in July... Accelerating Expansion of Sports Center Infrastructure Across Wolgye, Junggye, Sanggye, Gongneung, Surak, and Gwangwoon University Station Areas
Nowon District in Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seungrok) announced that it has completed the construction of the Gongneung Community Sports Center and will begin temporary operations.
The Gongneung Community Sports Center is a project that the district has been pursuing since 2019 to address the shortage of comprehensive indoor sports facilities in the Gongneung area. The land required for the center was secured through a public contribution from the reconstruction of the nearby Taereung Harrington Place apartment complex.
The center consists of three floors above ground and three basement levels, with a total floor area of 2,519 square meters. It is equipped with a four-lane swimming pool, a fitness center, equipment-based Pilates facilities, and a multipurpose gymnasium. For user convenience, the center is the first among the district's sports centers to install four kiosks, including those for people with disabilities, in the lobby area.
The programs were determined based on a demand survey in which approximately 2,000 residents participated. The offerings include swimming, aqua aerobics, fitness, equipment-based Pilates, and other indoor sports such as inline skating, table tennis, basketball, and badminton.
Registration can be completed either on-site or online through the Nowon District Facilities Management Corporation. However, for certain programs expected to be highly competitive, participation will be determined by lottery rather than on a first-come, first-served basis to provide more opportunities for new residents. Detailed information is available on the corporation's website.
The official opening date is July 1, but there will be a temporary operation period from June 16 to June 30. The district plans to hold an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. on June 12 in the multipurpose gymnasium on the center's second floor.
With the opening of the Gongneung Community Sports Center, the district's efforts to build sports infrastructure are progressing smoothly. Last year, the Sanggye Community Sports Center opened, and in the second half of this year, the Seoul Eoulrim Sports Center, which will be accessible to both people with and without disabilities, is scheduled for completion in the Surak and Madeul areas. The Junggye Community Sports Center is being reconstructed at its current location with a target completion date of 2027, and a multipurpose indoor sports facility will be established on public land as part of the Gwangwoon University Station Area Development Project in Wolgye-dong.
District Mayor Oh Seungrok stated, "Just as we have established healing and leisure facilities in each area, we are also expanding infrastructure so that residents can enjoy sports facilities close to home. We will continue to enhance the overall operation of our facilities and programs so that everyone can exercise easily and conveniently and improve their health."
