Tried the New Dyson Airwrap 'Coanda TwoX'
Twice the Airflow Strength Cuts Drying Time
Automatic Styling Perfect for Beginners
But the Higher 870,000 Won Price Raises Questions
"A hair dryer that costs 600,000 won?" In 2018, British home appliance company Dyson released a hair dryer priced at 590,000 won, which was considered quite shocking at the time. Since then, Dyson has continued to introduce products that are priced at least twice as high as other hair dryers on the market, which typically cost less than 100,000 won. In fact, the latest model, the 'Airwrap Coanda 2X Multi Styler and Dryer (Coanda TwoX),' was launched in Korea at a price of around 870,000 won. Is it really worth investing 800,000 won in a hair dryer? I decided to try the product myself.

The Coanda TwoX is available in two colors: Ceramic Pink and Jasper Plum. Since the main target customers are women in their 20s and 30s, the design seems to be aimed at appealing to them. Each time Dyson launches a new Airwrap series, it introduces different barrel (nozzle) configurations, and in this lineup, the 'AirSmooth' nozzle, which is shaped like a clamp for straightening, stood out. The other barrels appeared to be upgraded versions of those included in previous models.

I compared the older Airwrap model, the 'Origin Multi Styler and Dryer' released in 2022, with the new model. The size of the main body was almost the same, but the positions of the power button, airflow strength, temperature control button, and cooling function button had changed slightly. The connector for attaching the barrel had also been changed from a vertical to a horizontal orientation.

One notable change was that the cooling button, which was previously integrated with the power button in the old model, is now a separate button. In the past, you could select the cooling function using the same button after applying heat during manual styling, but now you have to press a separate button, which felt a bit inconvenient at first because I wasn't used to it.
I tried drying wet hair using the 'Fast Dryer' barrel of the Coanda TwoX. The airflow felt about twice as strong as when using the older Airwrap. Dyson explained that the new product is equipped with a 'Hyperdymium' motor that spins 150,000 times per minute. In addition, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based sensor automatically adjusts the heat to protect the hair.
Because the airflow was so strong, I was able to dry my hair quickly without increasing the temperature. It took only about 10 minutes to dry my long, thick hair that reaches my waist. Perhaps it was just my impression, but my hair seemed less damaged compared to when I used the older Airwrap. It seems like it could be a big help for busy people trying to get ready for work in the morning.
Next, I used the AirSmooth nozzle to straighten my hair. When I brought the nozzle close to my hair, it automatically detected the hair and the clamp closed; when it moved away, the clamp opened. Unlike a typical flat iron, which applies direct heat to the hair, this device straightens hair by blowing air through it. This allowed me to achieve straight hair without causing excessive damage. Also, my hair was less stiff compared to when I used a flat iron. This product seems suitable for those who want a more natural, voluminous straight style rather than the pin-straight look of a flat iron.

The other barrels also appeared to be slightly upgraded compared to the older model. For the curling barrel, which creates voluminous curls, the part that adjusts the curling direction was spaced further apart than in the previous version, and the direction control handle had changed from a round to a flatter shape. While there wasn't a significant difference in use, it felt a bit easier to grip when changing directions. The anti-tangle smoothing brush also featured finer and more delicate curves compared to the older brush.

I tried various styling options using the AirSmooth nozzle, curling barrel, and round volumizing brush. My frizzy hair became shinier and gained more volume. When I used the AirSmooth nozzle, it created a smooth, natural-looking straight style without being too flat. For ambiguous-length hair like bangs, the round volumizing brush provided a natural lift.

I was also able to use the smart features that have been available since the previous 'Airwrap I.D Multi Styler and Dryer' model. After installing the dedicated application 'My Dyson' on my phone and connecting it to the product via Bluetooth, I entered details such as hair type, length, thickness, and how well my hair holds a style, then selected my desired styling. Once the settings were complete, the app automatically recognized the barrel attached to the device. When I pressed the power button and brought the barrel to my hair, it automatically performed the wrap-styling-cold shot steps in sequence. When styling with the Airwrap, applying heat for 10 seconds followed by a blast of cool air for about 5 seconds helps set the style. This process can feel complicated, so this function seemed especially useful for those who struggle with hairstyling.

From the perspective of someone who used the older Airwrap, the new model feels like it has been delicately improved overall, which was quite satisfying. In particular, the enhanced airflow strength, which was a drawback of the previous Airwrap styler, is a significant advantage. However, the price, which is still in the 800,000 won range, remains a major burden. For those who are considering purchasing an Airwrap for the first time and are not confident in their hairstyling skills, the new model might be worth trying.
