Kim Youngrok: "Establishing Kim as a National Strategic Industry"

Jeollanam-do Develops Kim Activation Treatment Agent Specialized in Pest and Disease Control Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok is presiding over the 'Final Report Meeting on the Development Research Project of New Kim Activation Treatment Agent and Auxiliary Device' held on the 21st at the Seojaepil Room of the provincial office. Jeollanam-do has successfully developed a new Kim activation treatment agent with excellent pest and disease control and medicinal efficacy through a research project. The province has also filed for domestic and international patents and plans to begin full-scale supply during this year's aquaculture season.

On the 21st, Jeollanam-do held the final report meeting for the research project on the new Kim activation treatment agent. At the meeting, the province explained to relevant agencies and fishers that, after three years of effort, it had developed a highly effective Kim activation treatment agent, verified through aquaculture efficacy tests.

The development of the new Kim activation treatment agent was promoted through the joint efforts of Jeollanam-do, the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, and local fisheries cooperatives (Goheung, Haenam, Jindo, and Sinan). This initiative aimed to address the issue of fishers avoiding the use of existing activation agents and the unfortunate situation in which many fishers became criminally charged after being caught using illegal inorganic acids.

The research project was commissioned to Seoul National University, with Professor Hanamchul as the lead researcher.

The newly developed Kim activation treatment agent demonstrated outstanding results in aquaculture efficacy tests: 100% elimination of green algae, 140% removal of copepods, excellent suppression of fungi and control of pests and diseases, removal of heavy metals (cadmium), reduced working hours, and economic efficiency. The agent excelled in all aspects.

Intellectual property rights have been secured through domestic and international patent applications. In addition, a large-scale field test was conducted during this year's Kim production season, covering four cities and counties and 1,100 hectares, with 130 people directly using and testing the substance, thereby completing the verification process.

Kim producers who have used the new Kim activation treatment agent in aquaculture sites over the past two years said, "The effects of green algae and copepod removal, as well as pest and disease control, are clear. The work has become more convenient, as only about half the amount of inorganic acid needs to be used. We hope for mass supply so that it can be used during this year's Kim aquaculture season."

Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, stated, "To address the long-standing wishes of fishers, Jeollanam-do has independently developed, in collaboration with Seoul National University since 2022, a safe and highly effective Kim activation treatment agent to replace inorganic acids. We have completed field tests and patent applications, and plan to supply the agent during this year's Kim aquaculture season. We will do our utmost to establish the K-GIM National Strategic Industry Cluster for the sustainable development of the Kim industry."
