Curious About the Future of Mapo? Design It Yourself Through the Resident Participatory Budget

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Kangsu) is accepting applications for proposals for the 'Mapo-gu Resident Participatory Budget Projects' for the 2026 budget until June 30.

The Resident Participatory Budget System is a system that realizes fiscal democracy by allowing residents to directly identify projects needed in their community and participate in the budget allocation process.

Residents not only propose projects, but also actively participate in key procedures such as review and selection, ensuring that the budget is allocated more fairly and transparently.

The Mapo-gu Resident Participatory Budget Project call is open to all Mapo-gu residents, workers, students, and organizations.

Project proposals may be submitted in seven areas that promote resident convenience and regional development, including public safety, education and sports, welfare and health, tourism and economy, and urban and environment. Any project that aligns with the goal of making Mapo a better place can be proposed.

The total budget for the call is 1.2 billion KRW, with a maximum of 100 million KRW per general project and up to 20 million KRW per event-type project.

Project proposals can be submitted online through the Mapo-gu Resident Participatory Budget website. Access is also available via the QR code on the promotional materials for the Mapo-gu Resident Participatory Budget Project call.

If online submission is difficult, applicants may visit the Budget Policy Division on the 7th floor of Mapo-gu Office or submit the required documents by mail.

Projects proposed by residents will be selected through reviews by the relevant departments, subcommittee evaluations, a resident vote, and the Resident Participatory Budget Committee's review.

Selected projects will be finalized in the 2026 budget after approval by the Mapo-gu Council in December and will be implemented directly by the relevant departments.

Along with the project call, Mapo-gu plans to operate a Budget School in June for various groups, including the general public, youth, and women.

At the Budget School, customized education will be provided to enhance understanding of the Resident Participatory Budget System, share best practices, and guide participants in writing project proposals, with the aim of discovering more creative and feasible project ideas.

In particular, this year, Mapo-gu plans to offer hands-on workshops to provide practical assistance in developing proposals for residents who are interested in the project call but find it difficult to write a proposal.

Park Kangsu, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, "The Resident Participatory Budget System is a valuable communication channel through which residents' voices can be directly reflected in policy. I ask for your active interest and participation, and I will ensure that the participatory budget is managed substantively, together with residents, through transparent and fair procedures."
