Expansion of the New Media Advanced Technology Content Lab
On May 21, the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) announced that it will foster AI-based K-dramas, centering on its New Media Advanced Technology Content Lab. The New Media Advanced Technology Content Lab is one of the support programs under the planning and development lab operation support project for broadcast video content. It supports the production of drama genre content that incorporates new technologies.
This year, KOCCA will invest 2.1 billion won in this initiative, which is more than the amounts allocated to other planning and development lab operation support projects such as the Broadcast Format Lab (930 million won) and the Global Factual Lab (1.05 billion won). Five institutions will be selected, and the program will encourage practical content commercialization by supporting creators in planning, scriptwriting, and trailer or pilot production. Yoo Hyunseok, acting president of KOCCA, stated, "AI-based content is an important attempt that can transform the future paradigm of the industry," adding, "We will continue to support creative experiments and challenges taking place in the broadcast video industry."
KOCCA confirmed significant potential last year. Works by MBC C&I, which was selected as an operating institution, such as 'Mateo', 'Art in the World', and 'One More Dopamine', were recognized for their artistic merit at major international film festivals. The agency also achieved distribution results with these works being featured on the online video service Wavve.
In particular, 'Mateo' was highly praised for its visual aesthetics and experimental AI-driven narrative, winning the Grand Prize at the Korea AI International Film Festival. 'One More Dopamine' also delicately portrayed aspects of the digital era where the boundaries between reality and virtuality are blurred, earning the Best AI Film Award at the New York International Film Awards.
