Young farmers in Damyang County, South Jeolla Province, have formed a self-organized study group that is drawing attention for achieving meaningful results while strengthening their practical, field-based skills.
Damyang County (Governor Jeong Cheolwon) announced on the 20th that since last month, local young farmers have been conducting "voluntary rotational learning activities," where they visit each other's greenhouse farms to share operational know-how and cultivation techniques.
Participants exchanged information that can be applied directly in the field, such as pest and disease control, cost reduction in farm management, and crop-specific growth management. They also discussed problems encountered in actual agricultural settings and sought solutions. The participants are strengthening their practical capabilities, complementing theoretical education with hands-on experience in the field.
Kim Hyeonbae, who grows passion fruit in Subuk-myeon, said, "The biggest advantage is the vivid learning we gain by visiting each other's farms," adding, "The process of sharing similar concerns and finding solutions together has been genuinely helpful."
This study group is a pilot project initiated by the Damyang Agricultural Technology Center for young farmers who have completed two years of the Agricultural Academy. Based on the results of this operation, the county plans to consider expanding the program in the future.
An official from the county stated, "Sustainable local agriculture is only possible if an environment is created where young farmers can take the lead in learning and growing," adding, "We will continue to actively support practical, field-oriented education in the future."
