Namdong-gu in Incheon is pursuing a plan to recycle discarded used banners into solid fuel, which is similar in use to coal.
According to the district on May 20, used banners are plastic fabrics discarded after elections, events, or advertisements, and are typically disposed of by incineration, which negatively impacts the environment.
To address this issue, the district has introduced a new method in which collected used banners are sent to specialized recycling companies to be processed into solid fuel. Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF) is made by cutting and compressing combustible waste and can be used as a substitute for coal in facilities such as cement factories.
The district plans to process approximately 15 tons of collected banners into solid fuel within this year and intends to continuously expand the scale in the future. This initiative is expected to not only reduce harmful gas emissions and protect the environment, but also decrease the amount of waste and promote resource recycling.
Park Jonghyo, head of Namdong-gu District Office, said, "Recycling into solid fuel is an eco-friendly method that reduces waste while generating energy," adding, "We will continue to expand such eco-friendly policies to lay a solid foundation for achieving a carbon-neutral society and building a sustainable city."
