Busan National University Museum Hosts Dano Event with Campuses and Local Community

Make Your Own Traditional Fan and Sachet: Folk Experiences for 2,400 Participants
Held at Busan, Yangsan, Miryang Campuses and Local Children's Centers

Busan National University (President Choi Jaewon) Museum announced on May 20 that it will hold the event "Beat the Heat! Suritnal and Dano Fan" in celebration of Dano (the 5th day of the 5th lunar month). The event will offer free activities such as making your own traditional fan, crafting mugwort and hinoki sachets, and various folk experiences. It will be held from May 21 to May 29 at Busan National University’s Busan campus, Yangsan campus, Miryang campus, and at local children’s centers in Geumjeong-gu.

The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. each day, starting on May 21 at the central plaza of the Miryang campus. On May 27, it will take place around the College of Nursing at the Yangsan campus. On May 28, it will be held at 14 local children’s centers in Geumjeong-gu, Busan. On May 29, the event will be held at the lawn plaza in front of the museum on the Busan campus. Any citizen can participate until all 2,400 sets of materials have been distributed.

Dano has long been known by various names such as Suritnal, Jungojeol, and Cheonjungjeol. It was considered a major holiday, as it was believed to be the day when yang energy was at its peak during the year. In addition, it carries the meaning of wishing for a good harvest after rice planting is completed, just before the hot summer begins.

Lim Sangtaek, Director of the Busan National University Museum and professor in the Department of Archaeology, said, "This event will serve as an opportunity to reflect on traditional culture and seasonal customs, and to explore ways to utilize and pass on traditions in a modern context." He added, "This year, the event will be held together with the Daedongje Festival to provide a variety of cultural experiences. By expanding the event to the Miryang campus, we also aim to help bridge the cultural gap between campuses and promote communication with the local community."
