On May 19, Hampyeong County in Jeonnam announced that it has begun providing on-site technical support to migratory beekeeping operations in order to address the difficulties faced by beekeeping farms due to abnormal weather conditions, such as the disappearance of honeybees and the spread of pests and diseases.
On May 15, the county conducted on-site technical guidance for local migratory beekeepers in the areas of Seongju and Geochang in North Gyeongsang Province, coinciding with the peak nectar flow period when the acacia trees are in full bloom.
Until June, beekeepers will harvest 85% of their annual honey production. Migratory beekeepers will continue to move to Gyeonggi Province, Gangwon Province, and Chungcheong Province until the end of June to collect acacia honey, as well as wildflower (mixed flower) honey and chestnut honey.
During this period, meticulous management is required to prevent swarming and ensure smooth honey collection. This includes fully opening hive entrances, installing landing boards for bees, moving honey-filled combs to the top and replacing them with empty combs, and managing sacrificial colonies.
In particular, during the honey collection period, the use of chemical treatments should be suspended, and in the latter half of the season, thorough management is needed to prevent robbing, in order to safely harvest high-quality honey.
Moon Jeongmo, head of the Hampyeong County Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "Honeybees are an important biological resource that affect not only the beekeeping industry but also crop productivity. We will continue to expand field-oriented technical support and policy assistance to ensure stable income for beekeeping farms and to protect the ecosystem."
