"CIO's Investigative Drive Strengthened with New Appointments"
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has appointed a total of seven prosecutors, including two chief prosecutors and five regular prosecutors. These appointments followed recommendations from the CIO Prosecutor Personnel Committee, which is composed of both ruling and opposition party members, and were approved by the acting president on May 16. With these appointments, the CIO now has 21 out of its 25 authorized prosecutor positions filled, including two heads, two deputy heads, four chief prosecutors, and 15 prosecutors. The remaining four vacancies are expected to be filled within the first half of the year.
The newly appointed prosecutors are: Na Changsoo, attorney at Daeryun Law Firm (31st class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, former chief prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office); Kim Suhwan, attorney (33rd class, former deputy chief prosecutor at the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office); Choi Youngjin, attorney at Taeha Law Firm (41st class); Won Sunghui, head of the Legal Affairs Office at the Armed Forces Welfare Agency (42nd class); Choi Junghyun, attorney at Class Hangyeol Law Firm (43rd class); Lee Junghoon, police inspector (former head of the White-Collar Crime Investigation Team at Seoul Gangnam Police Station, 3rd bar exam); and Lee Eon, attorney at Gangnam Law Firm (5th bar exam).
Attorney Na Changsoo served as a prosecutor from 2008 until his retirement as chief prosecutor in July 2021, gaining experience in public security investigations and handling major cases such as the 2017 Incheon elementary school student kidnapping and murder case, which was selected as one of Korea's top 10 cases that year. Attorney Kim Suhwan served as a prosecutor for 15 years from 2004 until his retirement as deputy chief prosecutor in 2019, accumulating extensive experience in violent crime, finance, taxation, and corporate crime investigations. He also assisted with investigations into abuse of authority cases involving high-ranking officials at his law firm.
Attorney Choi Youngjin, a 41st class graduate of the Judicial Research and Training Institute, has built a diverse career at the Saemangeum Development Agency, as a public defender at Cheongju District Court, as a compliance officer at the National Intelligence Service, and at Taeha Law Firm. Won Sunghui, head of the Legal Affairs Office at the Armed Forces Welfare Agency and a 42nd class graduate, has served as a military judge and prosecutor for 12 years, gaining experience in various posts as a military legal officer. Attorney Choi Junghyun, a 43rd class graduate, has developed expertise in taxation, administrative law, and compliance through roles at the Board of Audit and Inspection, the National Assembly, and law firms, handling tax and Public Official Election Act cases.
Lee Junghoon, former head of the White-Collar Crime Investigation Team at Seoul Gangnam Police Station and a 3rd bar exam passer, joined the police through a special recruitment as an inspector and has developed specialized investigative skills by handling a variety of civilian cases in the Major Crime Investigation Division and Special Investigation Headquarters of the National Investigation Headquarters. Attorney Lee Eon, a 5th bar exam passer, has handled various civil and criminal cases and holds a digital forensics expert certification, demonstrating investigative capabilities in related fields.
Director Oh Dongwoon stated, "With the appointment of two chief prosecutors who have extensive prosecutorial experience and five regular prosecutors who have developed legal expertise in various fields, we expect the investigative capabilities of the office to be further strengthened."
