Real-time participation through Smart Senior Center video platform... Popular among seniors
Songpa District in Seoul (District Mayor Seo Kangseok) announced that it is operating a variety of cultural education programs through Smart Senior Centers to help seniors enjoy a healthy and vibrant later life.
The district has transformed eight existing senior centers into Smart Senior Centers. Since 2024, it has been providing customized leisure education for seniors, such as singing classes, health dance classes, and health lectures, using a remote video system for non-face-to-face instruction.
Each program is conducted by a specialized instructor in a studio and broadcast live simultaneously to the eight Smart Senior Centers in the area. Seniors participate in the classes by communicating with the instructor in real time through Smart TVs installed at each Smart Senior Center.
In particular, the singing class held every Tuesday and Friday is the most popular program, with the highest attendance rate among seniors. A professional singing instructor leads classes featuring popular and recent songs favored by seniors, and participants at each Smart Senior Center can join remotely, providing an engaging and immersive learning experience.
There are also programs focused on senior health. The health dance class, held every Thursday, is designed so that participants can enjoy simple movements to lively music. These physical activities help relieve stress, improve blood circulation, and boost immunity, thereby enhancing both physical and emotional health.
On May 28, a special health lecture will be held. Physical therapist Lee Hyeyeon has been invited as the instructor, and the special lecture will be given to about 100 seniors. The topic of the lecture is practical exercise methods using a resistance band.
Seniors who participated in the special health lecture at the Smart Senior Center in March expressed their satisfaction, saying, "It was great to take the class close to home," and "Thank you for teaching us easy-to-follow exercise methods." Encouraged by this enthusiastic response, the district plans to hold special health lectures on various topics every quarter.
Seo Kangseok, Mayor of Songpa District, stated, "I hope that this Smart Senior Center education will provide practical help for seniors to lead a vibrant life," and added, "We will continue to strengthen the operation of Smart Senior Centers so that seniors can enjoy a wider range of leisure activities in a more convenient and safe environment."
