Two Golds and One Silver at the 19th Hwacheon Peace Cup National Rowing Competition
First Place in Single Scull and Coxless Pair... Proving Strength in Women's Rowing
Songpa District in Seoul (District Mayor Seo Kangseok) announced on May 18 that the Songpa District Rowing Team won two gold medals and one silver medal at the 19th Hwacheon Peace Cup National Rowing Competition, held in Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province, from May 2 to May 4.
This prestigious nationwide competition, hosted annually by the Korea Rowing Association, is held to promote the development of rowing in Korea and to discover outstanding athletes. This year, a total of 66 teams and over 410 participants competed fiercely for the top honors at the Hwacheon Lake Rowing Stadium, with divisions for boys and girls in middle and high school, university, and general categories.
The Songpa District Rowing Team achieved excellent results, placing in three categories: first place in the single scull (1-person, Park Jiyoon) with a time of 8 minutes 13 seconds; first place in the coxless pair (2-person, Chae Sehyun and Jang Yejin) with a time of 7 minutes 56 seconds; and second place in the quadruple scull (4-person) with a time of 7 minutes 22 seconds.
Songpa District is the only local government in Seoul to operate a rowing team. Since its establishment in 2000, the team has consistently placed in national competitions, the Asian Rowing Championships, and the Asian Games over the past 25 years, establishing itself as a traditional powerhouse in women's rowing.
In particular, the district has provided continuous support to ensure athletes can focus on training in a stable environment, including setting up a training camp near the Misari Rowing Stadium and conducting training camps at Chungju Lake and Hwacheon Lake.
Seo Kangseok, Mayor of Songpa District, stated, "This remarkable achievement is the result of the athletes' efforts, the dedication of the coaches, and the consistent support from the administration," adding, "We will continue to actively support not only rowing but also the expansion of grassroots sports, so that all residents can enjoy a variety of sports and lead healthy, vibrant lives."
