Seongdong District in Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Wono) announced that it has implemented the 'Small Garden Creation Project,' transforming five unused spaces within the district into new green healing gardens.
Since last year, Seongdong District has been focusing on the 'Five-Minute Everyday Garden City' project, aiming to enable residents to enhance their happiness by enjoying leisure and relaxation provided by gardens throughout the city.
According to domestic and international research, viewing gardens reduces anxiety levels by 20% and negative moods by 11% compared to viewing urban landscapes. In addition, spending time in a garden at least once a week reduces the frequency of experiencing stress by 60%. Thus, creating gardens within the city has a highly positive impact on improving residents' quality of life.
In response, the district has created five additional gardens by utilizing small plots of land at the Eungbong Bridge Underpass Traffic Island Park, Singeumho Station, Majang Food Alley Town, the intersection between Ttukseom Station and Seongdonggyo Bridge, and in front of the Haengdang Underpass. These spaces are expected to serve not only as healing areas for residents within the city but also to significantly help improve the cityscape by preventing illegal dumping of waste.
In December last year, Seongdong District opened the 'Seongdong Gardening Center,' an experiential activity space themed around plants and gardens. The district has also trained a total of 113 community gardeners, making special efforts to spread garden culture and revitalize the green community within the region.
Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong District, stated, "We have actively utilized small plots of land to create beautiful gardens so that residents can fully enjoy the pleasures that gardens offer close to their daily lives," adding, "We will continue to work on creating everyday gardens within walking distance to further enhance residents' satisfaction and happiness."
