The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) announced on May 16 that Lee Sukjin, former Vice Minister of Gender Equality and Family, has been appointed as its new standing commissioner. Recommended by the Democratic Party of Korea, Lee was elected through a plenary vote in the National Assembly in September 2024.
The term of the new standing commissioner will begin on May 20, 2025, and last for three years. Lee Sukjin graduated from Ewha Womans University with a degree in journalism and broadcasting, and obtained both her master's and doctoral degrees in women's studies from the same university. She previously served as Secretary for Measures Against Polarization and Livelihood at the Blue House during the Roh Moo-hyun administration, and as Vice Minister of Gender Equality and Family under the Moon Jae-in administration.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea consists of four standing commissioners, including the chairperson, and seven non-standing commissioners. Four members are elected by the National Assembly, four are appointed by the President, and three are designated by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
