Distribution of Dedicated Waste Vinyl Bags Expanded to 21,000 Daily Life-Related Businesses
Waste Vinyl Disposal Bags Provided Together with Purchase of Commercial Volume-Based Waste Bags
Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyungho) is expanding its project to promote the separate disposal of waste vinyl in order to reduce household waste.
Vinyl is a material that is often mistakenly discarded in standard volume-based waste bags, but separating it can help reduce the amount of general waste generated.
In July of last year, the district designated the areas of Neungdong-ro and Achasan-ro as focused management zones in order to improve the disposal practices of commercial facilities, which tend to generate more waste vinyl than general households. By distributing 300,000 dedicated waste vinyl bags to 10,000 businesses and providing intensive guidance on disposal methods, the amount of sorted waste vinyl increased by 373 tons from September to December, a 19% rise compared to the same period the previous year.
This year, the distribution of waste vinyl bags has been expanded to 21,000 businesses in all sectors closely related to daily life in the district, including restaurants and supermarkets. Store owners can receive bundled waste vinyl bags when purchasing commercial volume-based waste bags. The timing of the supply of dedicated waste vinyl bags may vary by region depending on the inventory status of the standard waste bags.
Only vinyl materials such as packaging vinyl from snacks and coffee, air caps, and thermal insulation packs should be collected in the dedicated bags. Once the dedicated bags are used up, waste vinyl can be disposed of in transparent or semi-transparent bags.
The district plans to improve disposal practices and increase resource recycling rates by combining on-site promotional activities. Until November, recycling promotion staff will visit businesses to clarify the types of waste vinyl that are often confusing and provide guidance on proper disposal methods.
The "Visiting Separate Collection Experience Class" will also be held this month. A total of 84 sessions will be conducted at 8 kindergartens, 11 elementary and middle schools, and 9 community centers, raising awareness of the importance of separate collection through hands-on activities using educational materials.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, "For resources to be efficiently circulated within the community, it is most important to separate them by material at the disposal stage. I urge residents to actively practice separate collection so that recyclable resources are not mixed and discarded with general waste in standard volume-based bags."
