On May 16, the Daejeon city government announced that it had signed a business agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the "Activation of the Quantum Industry and Enhancement of Global Competitiveness of Domestic Companies."
Through this agreement, the city plans to introduce AWS's cloud-based quantum computing platform, Amazon Braket, to local universities, research institutes, and companies. With this, these institutions will be able to conduct real-world quantum algorithm experiments and verify industrial technologies. Amazon Braket is a fully managed service that enables researchers, scientists, and developers to get started with quantum computing.
In addition, by linking with AWS's quantum computing business support program, Quantum Embark, the city will provide tailored consulting and a cloud-based proof-of-concept environment for local small and medium-sized enterprises, and will also promote joint support projects to enhance global market entry opportunities. This program helps companies prepare for adopting quantum computing through AWS expert-led training, use case discovery, technology capability enhancement, and standard modules for in-depth analysis.
The city aims to leverage this agreement to provide AWS's global platform to existing quantum infrastructure, including local talent, government-funded institutions, and companies in research and industrial complexes. By doing so, Daejeon intends to establish a full-cycle ecosystem for quantum technology demonstration, transition, and dissemination, thereby preparing in earnest for the era of quantum industrialization.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, stated, "It is meaningful to take the first step of cooperation with AWS, a global leading company, in this symbolic year designated as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology," adding, "This agreement will be more than a simple technological partnership; it will serve as the starting point for Daejeon to emerge as a global hub for the quantum industry."
Yoon Jungwon, Head of AWS Korea Public Sector, said, "We are pleased to accelerate quantum technology innovation in Korea through collaboration with Daejeon," and added, "Through Amazon Braket, researchers and companies in Daejeon will gain easy access to global quantum hardware, contributing to the strengthening of Korea's quantum ecosystem and Daejeon's rise as a global hub."
