Police Raid Ministry of Land Over Alleged Preferential Treatment in Yangpyeong Expressway Route Change

On the morning of May 16, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency began conducting search and seizure operations at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Yangpyeong County Office, and the service provider Kyungdong Engineering, among others.

Previously, the Gyeonggi Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party of Korea and the civic group Citizens' Action for Judicial Justice filed a complaint in July 2023 with the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, accusing former Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong of abuse of authority.

They claimed that former Minister Won abused his authority by changing the Yangseo-myeon terminus route of the Seoul-Yangpyeong Expressway, which had been maintained since the 2019 preliminary feasibility study announcement, to the Gangsang-myeon terminus route, where the family of First Lady Kim Keon-hee owns land, with the intention of granting preferential treatment to the family of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
