Final Piece of Gyeonggi Convergence Town, "Gyeonggi Garden," Breaks Ground on 16th... Peace Pond and More to Be Created

The construction of "Gyeonggi Garden," the final piece in the creation of Gyeonggi Convergence Town, officially began on May 16, with completion targeted for the first half of 2026.

Gyeonggi Convergence Town is a public institution complex development project located in Gwanggyo New Town, Suwon. Centered around the Gyeonggi Provincial Government building, the project brings together eight public institutions?including the Provincial Assembly, Provincial Office of Education, Gyeonggi Library, Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation, Gyeonggi Credit Guarantee Foundation, Bank of Korea Gyeonggi Headquarters, and Iui 119 Safety Center?as well as private residential-commercial complexes.

Since 2022, major institutions have sequentially moved in, starting with the Gyeonggi Provincial Government. With the completion of Gyeonggi Garden in the first half of 2026, the Gyeonggi Convergence Town project will be finalized.

The Gyeonggi Garden, covering a total area of 32,700 square meters, will be developed as a green space for leisure and relaxation for local residents.

Designed as an eco-friendly RE100 garden that produces its own renewable energy for power?addressing both carbon reduction and climate measures?Gyeonggi Garden will feature a 6,500-square-meter lawn plaza, a Peace Pond where visitors can enjoy water play, a children's playground, and a barefoot walking path made of yellow soil.

In particular, Gyeonggi Garden will include the "Gyeonggi Arborvitae," a symbolic tree that has accompanied the administrative history of the Gyeonggi Provincial Government from the Gwanghwamun government complex to its current location.

The Gyeonggi Arborvitae is a special tree symbolizing the 100-year history of Gyeonggi Province. It is believed to have been planted in 1910 when the provincial government building was constructed at the site of the former Uijeongbu in front of Gwanghwamun, Seoul.

After the provincial government relocated to Suwon in 1967, the arborvitae remained alone at the old Gwanghwamun site until 2018, when a decision was made?through discussions between Seoul City and Gyeonggi Province?to transplant it to Gyeonggi Province. It is currently temporarily planted in front of the Gwanggyo Museum in Suwon.

To widely share the history and symbolism of the provincial government building and pass it on to future generations, Gyeonggi Province plans to transplant the Gyeonggi Arborvitae into Gyeonggi Garden and create a separate "Gyeonggi Arborvitae Rest Area" nearby. The rest area will include informational signs and benches, allowing citizens to appreciate the beauty of the old tree and naturally learn about the history of the provincial government.

Chun Byungmun, head of the Architectural Facilities Division at the Gyeonggi Provincial Construction Headquarters, stated, "Gyeonggi Garden is planned as an urban garden that addresses climate measures such as carbon absorption, solar power generation, and mitigation of the heat island effect, while also serving as a venue for various cultural events and community activities. We will thoroughly manage the construction process to prevent any damage from noise, dust, or vibration that may occur during construction, and successfully complete the creation of Gyeonggi Convergence Town."
